Early Winter

20110504-070212

It is difficult to describe how beautiful it is to XC ski on the winter trails surrounding Buffalo Narrows, Saskatchewan. A mere five minutes outside of the small community leads one to true wilderness – the silence is almost deafening.

Yet, I always felt that something was watching me. Wolves were known to prowl very close to town and prey upon small dogs. One morning on the way to work I came across what I initially thought to be a small pack of dogs (outside dogs as they were locally referred to), but, in fact, were wolves running through town on their way to the narrows. An abrupt reminder that we were just temporary inhabitants on their territory.
