Trolls can be defined as follows:
1. One who posts a deliberately provocative response to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.
2. In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion, often for the troll’s amusement.
One of the most useful features in WordPress is the ability to screen out unsolicited and off topic comments, negative and derogatory comments, inflammatory comments, and blatant self-promotion by others. A comment filter is like a gatekeeper that invites responsibility and constructive communication and keeps out the trolls. If you have been posting for any length of time on WordPress, you know your spam filter picks up a whole lot of junk automatically. At the same time, it can be quite time consuming defending against the proverbial trolls.
Most bloggers know that there are some (perhaps many) who are on social media sites like WordPress for nefarious purposes. Typically, people and organized groups are not who they say they are and go to great lengths to masquerade as followers and/or supporters. Like an expert who can differentiate between a real and a counterfeit twenty dollar bill, I have learned how to identify and/or recognize these interlopers.
The problem with communicating relevant social, religious, and political viewpoints to an international audience is that we are not only subject to trolling, but we are being monitored by those who dwell in the dark underbelly of the internet. Unfortunately, this is where various governments and their obscene spy apparatus dwell also.
It is never a comfortable feeling to know that all our electronic data is being sucked up into a massive series of databases worldwide without our knowledge or consent. Some make the common error that as long as they are living moral and ethical lives under the various laws of their society – they will be OK.
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I do not want to create a sense of uneasiness or fear for those that actively blog. I just want you to be aware of the dangers, and to have the wisdom and knowledge to know how to deal with all of the aforementioned.
Remember, the vast majority of laws in western society were created for our protection as citizens of our respective nations.
It is those laws, the gatekeepers, that protect ordinary citizens from not only the nefarious underground, but against overreaching western governments also.
I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Matthew 10:16 NIV
