Why do some individuals and groups feel that society owes them everything? At the same time, these same individuals and groups neither contribute significantly to society nor recognize or accept their responsibility for doing so.
Is that the kind of society you want to live in? I doubt it, yet your average citizen (myself included) is either disinterested, preoccupied, or too afraid to say or do anything about it. We all want the benefits of our respective societies, but so many are unwilling to do what ever it takes legally, ethically, and morally, as a citizen of their nation, to ensure a peaceful and secure future for their children’s children.
Perhaps, for the first time in the history of humankind, the pendulum can swing either way. We are at a crisis point, as it were, of whether our very species will either thrive and prosper in peace or utterly destroy ourselves.
Nevertheless, the enemy is not external to us – the enemy is within our respective societies. The great civilizations of history did not fall because of predominantly external forces, they fell from within. When a nation decays internally due to poverty, injustice, corruption, lack of morality and ethics, and tolerates the same – it will fall.
History is littered with the broken minds, bodies, and souls of selfish men and women.
Terrorism is not the number one problem of civilized societies. Neither is collapsing economies and global unrest. Our collective problem is moral and ethical decay from within. There are numerous secular and religious ideologies, and even institutions in global society, that earnestly and violently seek to overrun and destroy peaceful society as we know it today. When the mainstream media begins to encourage, propagate, and glorify civil disobedience and violence towards anyone in authority, you know we are sliding down a slippery slope of no return.
The good news is that we are not alone on this planet to fend for ourselves to the best of our abilities. The very God who created the heavens and the earth is present in the affairs of men and women. He is the One who holds our times in His hands. He alone determines the future of our planet and the inhabitants within.
Psalm 115:3 “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.”
Proverbs 16:9 “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Isaiah 40:23 “…who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.”
2 Chronicles 20:6 “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.”
Zechariah 4:6 “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”
But, don’t be fooled by our relative security or lack thereof. Our individual nations will rise or fall according to our collective morality and ethics. If we do not turn to God, as we understand Him, in fervent repentance (literally, to turn 180 degrees around from our errant ways and walk towards God) and sorrow as a nation(s), we too will suffer the consequences of our own collective wrongful choices (free will). The pendulum of history will swing against us, and we too will perish.
The choices we make today become who we are tomorrow.
